Axis Deer

The spotted Chital deer has been in Hawaii for a long time.  They are now found on three of the Main Islands: Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.  For best hunting experience, one is better off on either Lanai or on Maui private lands.  Anyone wanting to hunt for deer on Molokai may want to check what guides are registered by clicking here.  Or one might be better off making friends with a local hunter.  Lanai is well known for its deer herds.  Archery hunting is available too for a small fee.  Contact Gary Onuma of the Lanai Company, Game Management Department.

Maui has a growing deer heard originally in the dry lands around Kihei but now spreading to all parts of the island.  Huntable numbers are still found primarily in the central portion of the island.  There is a rule that says any deer seen in a public hunting unit on Maui may be taken regardless of number or sex.  However, few deer exist on maui's public hunting areas.  Most flee to surrounding private lands, residential and agricultural areas where they become pests.  West Maui does not have huntable numbers of axis deer and it is unlikely that any can be encountered in the wet forests above the Hana highway.  Practically all deer hunting on Maui occurs on large private parcels.
